Spectrum of drug use and abuse, definitions and perceptions, characteristics of physiological and psychological dependence, patterns of use, models of alcoholism and addiction, treatment spectrum, values clarification.

This is a skills training, experiential in nature, and that all participants have had at least 6 hours of introductory training and have been practicing MI with clients. Limit 20.

This two-day training is designed to assist counselors working with adolescents to address the unique challenges they may have as they consider ways to integrate assessment and treatment approaches to more fully meet the needs of youth with co-occurring mental and substance use disorders. It also provides a review of adolescent development and some of the evidence-based and promising practices that support integrated interventions.

An overview of Evidence-based and Best Practices for co-occurring disorders and those listed as EBP’s for either MH or SA separately. This course is intended as an exposure to the concept of EBP’s and to some of the EBPs available. It will also discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

What is recovery? What is a recovery-oriented system of care? What does it mean to be “in recovery” through the lens of mental illness and/or substance use disorders? How can a counselor support the recovery process? This course will also examine different relapse prevention models.
