CYFS Substance Abuse Services Coordinator
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position serves to implement NWCS’s Prevention Plan by utilizing a working knowledge of prevention technologies, to plan, implement, and evaluate MH, SA Prevention Services and intervention of various types, in conjunction with other staff and the CYFS SA Services Supervisor. This includes, but is not limited to direct education, public awareness activities, developing of community resources, and the design and initiation of specialized interventions to address specific high risk populations or known factors related to the causes of mental dysfunction or substance abuse.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Publishes and writes NWCS Prevention Plan at time frames specified by Virginia DMHMRSAS, in close collaboration with supervisor.
2. Updates and maintains NWCS reporting to Virginia DMHMRSAS through the Performance Based Prevention System database.
3. Provides public education.
4. Designs and implements public awareness of factors that promote good mental health, and prevent mental dysfunction caused by mental illness, mental retardation, or substance abuse.

5. Coordinates and plans prevention activities in conjunction with other community agencies and groups when appropriate. May represent agency at locality prevention coalitions, as determined by supervisor.
6. Maintains good working relationships with those community agencies groups and councils that share goals and objectives compatible with those of NWCS Prevention Plan.
7. Maintains a working knowledge of current technologies in the field of Prevention.
8. Documents and evaluates the effectiveness of services provided.
9. Provides consultation and training to other agencies and community groups, that would further the goals of Prevention.
10. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor, which are consistent with the position and in compliance with agency policy and procedures.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge:
Knowledge of the nature of Prevention concepts and services; of community organizational theories; of mental illness, mental retardation, and substance abuse theories and concepts, as well as knowledge of related risk factors and high risk populations.
Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to develop prevention projects from concept to program activity or intervention, through research, analysis, and planning; to conduct needs assessments; to develop educational materials, and design curriculum; to develop and maintain community contacts; to communicate effectively in verbal and written format and prepare and maintain accurate records, and to develop good rapport with program participants. Ability to utilize personal computer in performing job functions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors Degree in a relevant human service field, with formal training and/or experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities required. Masters Degree preferred.
