NWCS CIT 2022 Training year has come to a successful end. Our amazing team provided 5 CIT Basic 40 trainings to 88 Law Enforcement and Correctional Officers and 1 CIT Train the Trainer graduating 8 new CIT Instructors. Additionally, we provided 2 CIT Dispatch Trainings at the request of Frederick County Emergency Communications Center to their staff of 14 Dispatchers. Participating jurisdictions this year include Clarke, Warren, Shenandoah, Page, and Winchester Sheriff’s Offices, Woodstock, Strasburg, Winchester, Stephens City, Front Royal Police Departments, Virginia State Police, Federal Police, NRADC and RSW Regional Jails. New to our Basic 40 training this year were staff from Page County ECC and Shenandoah County ECC/ Fire and Rescue along with the Honorable Judge Mary Daniels who presides over the Mental Health Docket in Frederick County General District Court.
CIT training is a comprehensive educational based experience that prepares First Responders who come in contact with individuals with mental illness to recognize the signs and symptoms and to effectively and appropriately respond. As First Responders at the scene of a crisis, it is crucial to know how mental illness can alter behaviors, perceptions and reactions. Through techniques such as de-escalation and active listening, outcomes for everyone involved in a mental health crisis improve. Thank you to EVERYONE: Law Enforcement Instructors, NWCS MH Professionals and Community Professionals who provide their time and expertise to our CIT Program.
